Simmen Wood Works
Simmen Wood Works knows that architecture is more than designing buildings. We work with our clients to craft memorable spaces.
Gary Simmen recently had an interview with a jotish (Wiseman) in India. The first thing he said was “Gary, you have a passion for wood”. This was based on an exact time and place of Gary’s birth.
Working with wood has been his life’s passion for over 55 years. He estimates that he has handled, touched, smelled, process, bought and sold over a billion board feet of wood in his career.
In chronological order, he has worked as lumber yard worker, apprentice carpenter, cabinet and furniture designer and craftsman, lumber wholesaler and eventually owner of a lumber, manufacturing plant. This plant produced a variety of wood products ranging from crating material, fine mill work, cabinetry and fine furniture production.
His customer base included national manufacturing plants, contractors and individuals. At the peak of his lumber manufacturing business he employed 50 employees doing many levels of woodworking.
Recently this business has been closed and Gary has directed his attention to a smaller custom wood working shop.
This shop allows him to focus on his true joy, working with people starting with the design process, the planning, the hands on construction and the feeling of accomplishment that each project create.
The following pictures and explanation show the diversity of pass projects. This diversity shows years of accumulated knowledge and skills that range from simple to complex.
There are very few woodworkers who have developed the variety of skills to accomplish the diversity of projects that Gary has accomplished.
The enjoyment for both the customer and the skilled craftsman to participate in the process of an abstract thought (design) through manifestation (the product) is a satisfaction that is unsurpassed.

…As you will observe in what follows, many pieces are made from recycled and/or reclaimed with a history. If you have wood that is valuable to you, lets work together and make a piece with meaning to you and your family.
